Quantum-Confined Nanoelectronics

Quantum confinement in semiconductor heterostructures began to drive a new class of optoelectronic devices during this period, with quantum-well lasers showing reduced temperature sensitivity and room-temperature nonlinear optical effects emerging in GaAs/Ga1−xAlxAs multiple quantum well structures. The era also advanced nanoscale quantum devices in superconducting and single-electron regimes, as ultra-low-noise dc superconducting quantum interference devices and Coulomb blockade phenomena informed sensor and circuit design. Collectively, these developments established a unified trajectory toward quantum-enabled, highly integrated photonic, sensing, and electronic devices.
